The weavers of these older rugs were often nomadic and would pass their knowledge of weaving and designing to younger members of their tribe or family. The weavers were able to use the various natural dyes that were readily available in their native regions to produce animated works of art. Many of these dye recipes were guarded as precious tribal secrets.

As Western influence impacted primary cultures across the globe, the ability to sustain traditional weaving techniques began to fade and original motifs were lost. The rugs that were woven after this time did not possess the same quality and character as those woven in their prime.
