In the past, Conneaut Lake Park has been a popular tourist destination for both Pennsylvanians and Ohioans. The site has been reopened by a non-profit corporation, the Trustees of Conneaut Lake Park. The Trustees have sought donations and sought to revitalize the park. Some of the rides, such as the Blue Streak roller coaster, were restored by volunteers.
In late 2013, the Trustees were awarded a grant from the National Endowment of the Arts to create a community arts component to the overall project. Bill Eldridge, chairman of the Trustees, said they were pleased to be one of the 66 “Our Town” projects selected nationwide for this grant.
In addition to the community arts component, the Trustees are hoping to secure funding from other sources. The borough is applying for grants through the Pennsylvania Assistance Capital Program and the Department of Community and Economic Development. A local businessman has offered to match the grant money with a private donation. The Trustees are also seeking funding from the state and federal government to pay for some of the design work.
The borough also is looking into the possibility of turning part of the property on Water Street into a public art trail. The Trustees and Amara Geffen, an art professor at Allegheny College, are collaborating to implement the community engagement process that will result in design and implementation of sculptures for the new public art trail. Geffen is working with three other Allegheny College artists and an ethnographer to engage residents in the process. She will serve as the lead artist on the project.
