What about my existing smart home devices?
If a device uses Wi-Fi, it can get Matter support with an over-the-air firmware update. For example, Amazon’s Alexa-compatible Echo and Dot smart speakers will support Matter via a new feature called Fast Pair. Other devices, like Yale’s locks and Eve Systems’ lights, need hardware changes to make them Matter compatible. These include swappable radio modules for Yale’s locks and adding Thread radios to Eve’s products. However, these upgrades won’t affect the functionality of the devices or change how they are sold.
Other companies, such as Ikea, Nanoleaf and GE Lighting, have announced products that will be upgradable to Matter. The former has promised a firmware update to its smart lighting, while the latter will add support for its newest appliances and smart display. Similarly, the company that makes the Philips Hue Bridge smart lighting hub has said it will be able to upgrade to Matter through an OTA update.
The big four smart home ecosystems — Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa and Samsung SmartThings — all support Matter, which means you’ll be able to control your matter-compatible devices with any of their apps, voice assistants or hubs. A Matter feature called Multi-Admin also means you can use a mix of ecosystems to manage the same devices. matter residences
