It’s available only by prescription, but it can reduce fine lines and wrinkles, squelch acne, and smooth skin texture. It’s a potent product that can be incredibly irritating if it’s misused, but there are some things you can do to limit early temporary side effects and make the most of your tretinoin cream.

Start by washing your face with a mild cleanser and gently patting it dry, as rubbing can irritate the skin. Then apply a thin layer of tretinoin cream to your chin, forehead, and cheeks (avoiding the corners of the mouth, eyes, and nose) before bed each night.

Most people experience an adjustment period when starting tretinoin, and the first few weeks can be challenging. Your doctor will help you determine the right frequency and concentration to achieve your goals. It’s also a good idea to wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen each day because tretinoin makes your skin more sensitive to sunlight.

Side Effects

Your skin may experience some irritation and peeling when you first start using tretinoin. This is normal and usually goes away within 2 to 4 weeks. You may also notice that your skin color changes slightly while taking this medication. This is due to your existing skin cells being shed and replaced with new ones.

Your doctor may recommend that you avoid certain products or situations, such as sun exposure, to help reduce your chances of side effects. Some products that can irritate your skin include permanent wave solutions, waxing preparations, harsh soaps, and moisturizers that are not oil-free. It is also important to tell your doctor about any other medications that you are currently taking, including supplements and vitamins.

It is not known if this drug passes into breast milk, so it is recommended that you talk to your doctor before breastfeeding. This medication is not recommended for children younger than 12. Do not use this medication on open wounds or eczema.

Precautions

It is important to note that Tretinoin is not for everyone. Individuals with sensitive skin, eczema or rosacea may find that it irritates their skin. Other medications and topical preparations can interact with tretinoin. Oral tretinoin is contraindicated for pregnant women, as it has been associated with harm to the fetus. However, it is not known if topical tretinoin is safe for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Women should also avoid exposure to sunlight, as it can cause increased photosensitivity.

Dosage

Retinoids are powerful medications. They can cause severe side effects if not used properly or by someone with sensitive skin. It is important to titrate the medication – start slow and gradually increase frequency and strength as your skin adapts.

Avoid using this medication on sunburned or irritated skin. It can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight and you may get a sunburn even on cloudy days or when the sun is out of sight. If you must be in the sun, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.

This medication can interact with certain medications, especially tetracycline antibiotics (including Lymecycline). It also can exacerbate the side effects of hair removal treatments such as waxing, chemical depilatories, or laser treatment. If you are using these medications or are thinking of starting them, talk to your doctor or pharmacist about how they interact with this medication. Tretinoin 0.05% Cream
